Dear Pastors and Missionaries,

I would suggest you teach the “How to get more money from God” series in Sunday School and preach this series, “The Faith Series” in Hebrews 11, in the morning worship service.

As you and your people increase in faith the more you/they will trust God in the matter of giving. The two go together.

May God bless you as you teach your people how to trust God and to obey Him in their giving.

Someone said, “If you want to keep your people poor, don’t teach them how to give.”

This material really works well. All our churches in the Philippines, planted by our graduates, are self-supporting.

May God bless you.

What on earth did you do in your Sunday Morning Service?

I have never heard of a pastor doing this besides me.

Congratulations, Dr. Tony Evans for teaching your people in your Sunday morning service this most important subject.

Most Christians have no idea how to lead a person to Christ and it is mainly the fault of the leadership in our Bible believing churches. The members of their church have not been taught how to share their faith.

JESUS SAID “…Ye (they, our church members) do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” Matthew 22:29

(by an unknown author)

An old farmer went to the city one weekend and attended the big city church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was.

“Well,” said the farmer. “It was good. They did something different, however. They sang praise choruses instead of hymns.”

“Praise choruses?” asked the wife. “What are those?”

“Oh, they’re okay. They’re sort of like hymns, only different,” said the farmer.

“Well, what’s the difference?” asked the wife.

The farmer said, “Well it’s like this … If I were to say to you, ‘Martha, the cows are in the corn,’ well that would be a hymn. If, on the other hand, I were to say to you, ‘Martha, Martha, Martha, Oh, Martha, MARTHA, MARTHA, the cows, the big cows, the brown cows, the black cows, the white cows, the black and white cows, the COWS, COWS, COWS are in the corn, are in the corn, are in the corn, in the CORN, CORN, CORN, COOOOORRRRRNNNNN,’ then, if I were to repeat the whole thing two or three times, well that would be a praise chorus.”

As luck would have it, the exact same Sunday a young, new Christian from the city church attended the small town church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was.

“Well,” said the young man, “It was good. They did something different, however. They sang hymns instead of regular songs.”

“Hymns?” asked the wife. “What are those?”

“They’re okay. They’re sort of like regular songs, only different,” said the young man.

“Well, what’s the difference?” asked the wife.

The young man said, “Well it’s like this … If I were to say to you, ‘Martha, the cows are in the corn,’ well that would be a regular song. If on the other hand, I were to say to you,:

Oh Martha, dear Martha, hear thou my cry
Inclinest thine ear to the words of my mouth.
Turn thou thy whole wondrous ear by and by
To the righteous, glorious truth.
For the way of the animals who can explain
There in their heads is no shadow of sense,
Hearkenest they in God’s sun or his rain
Unless from the mild, tempting corn they are fenced.
Yea those cows in glad bovine, rebellious delight,
Have broke free their shackles, their warm pens eschewed.
Then goaded by minions of darkness and night
They all my mild Chilliwack sweet corn chewed.
So look to that bright shining day by and by,
Where all foul corruptions of earth are reborn
Where no vicious animal makes my soul cry
And I no longer see those foul cows in the corn,

then, if I were to do only verses one, three and four, and change keys on the last verse, well that would be a hymn.”

What about “Contemporary Christian Music?” Should it be used in church services?

Some contemporary music is honoring to God, and some is not. Motive, method, and doctrine must all be examined.

#1 Motive:

Motives like getting away from hymns, updating the church, becoming relevant to culture, attracting unbelievers, sounding like the world, appealing to youth, not boring the congregation, changing it up, etc; these are poor motives that do not honor God or worship Him, as they focus on the self. They also do harm to the call to be in the world, but not of it.

The motive to play a song (old or new) should simply be that it is a song good for worshiping the Lord!

#2 Method:

Not every CW band will have these problems. They are common though, so the music is often confused with the method.

Sustained loud music is actually unsafe (loss of hearing), and painful for many congregants (headaches, seizures, etc). This has a tendency to force the elderly and the sensitive to sit outside or in the back. It is not just people with medical conditions who may be affected by loud music or strong vibrations.

While ‘max’ volume is going to vary by the individual health needs of the church, a basic guideline for everyone is that normal worship music should be under 85 decibels, and there can be -short- peaks and bursts that go higher (never an entire set or longer than 15 minutes, as hearing loss sets in with sustained 90+ music). The maximum volume can always be less; God can hear equally well at 3 decibels or 300.

Other problems that may creep into the method of presentation are

-the secularization of the church (as in, the band is trying deliberately to look like the world).

-‘come as you are, and stay that way’ mentality. The band exhorts us not to be holy and set apart in the righteousness of Christ, but to revel in our broken humanity

– the worship of the band over the worship of God (the praises of the band are extolled “come see the hip new band with great lyrics and awesome music! They are really on fire!” while the praises of God are minimized (Explicit praises like ‘How excellent are the things you have made, your wonders fill the earth’ are replaced with vague and self-focused lines like ‘I love to praise you God, I’m going to praise you, look how we praise you’, etc – while never actually getting around to the actual praising). Posters and advertisements for bands and events may be made with lots of information and pictures about the band members, but very little (sometimes even nothing) about Jesus.

-Biblical ideas on worship (service, praise, thanksgiving, etc) can be replaced by experiential high and entertainment. While the Bible emphasizes being set apart, extolling the glory of God, and laying our life down as a living sacrifice all as different types of worship – contemporary music often treats worship as the experiential ‘feeling’ of being close to God.

– Musically, the songs are often difficult for the congregation to sing. They often tend to be ‘performance’ songs.

-Vain repetition and filler words (Woahahooooahoh…), rather than increasing the mindfulness of our worship, have a tendency to zone out the mind and focus the person on the feeling.

– A hip image may be prized over embracing spiritual gifts and talents. Many sound problems come from imbalanced sound, or bad singers. Compound a bad sound system or off-key musicians with loud volume, and you will end up with a distracted congregation that is in pain. The same goes for song-writing.

#3 Doctrine:

While there are many wonderful contemporary songs that will likely endure as classics – contemporary songs overall trend towards being vague. Many songs do not shy in bringing in strange theologies, or skew towards personal view points. Many could easily be secular love songs (In the Secret). Some warp scripture entirely (Days of Elijah), or flip around scripture to highlight self (Above All).

It is fine to use contemporary songs, but test any song against scripture, and be sure the motive and manner are for the worship of God.

Ptr. Mel Brown

Let me ask you a question, “How interested are you in having a “top notch” relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ?” The choice is yours. I cannot make that choice for you. There are no short cuts.

You can choose to do what you want in this life but you cannot choose the consequences.

As you read the Bible (KJV) you will learn that God will bless your life if you seek and obey His will. Not to do this will rob you and others of His blessings.

Of course it is very important that you connect yourself with a good Bible Preaching church that is faithful to the Word of God and attend it faithfully. A Church that has a great missions program reaching people here and abroad with the gospel of Jesus Christ. I would suggest you attend all the services for 3 or 4 weeks before you become a member. Ask questions. Look at their statement of faith. Here is a Biblical statement of faith. Find out what they believe and practice.

My wife and I faithfully attend this church where the Word of God is taught and preached on Sunday morning & evening as well as Wednesday evening. It is not a perfect church because 3 or 4 hundred attend there but we do present a perfect Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. If you are in the Birmingham, Alabama area please come and visit. We have ministries from Nursery age up through the Seniors. We have a Spanish church, a bus ministry, and a great youth program. Our music will bless your heart.

I have posted many good audio and videos at www.bama4u.org/heaven2.htm and at www.bama4u.org just to help people like you and your family. One helpful message is “Nailing the Windows of Heaven Shut.”

My philosophy in life has been “The first impulse in every healthy mind, upon hearing a good thing, is to pass it on to others.” This is what I have tried to do with this web page, pass on a “good thing” to you.

Friend, if I can assist you in this matter of having a good relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, please write me at bama4u@bellsouth.net.

May God bless you as you seek Him,

Melvyn and Carol Brown

Having been saved, (born again) at an early age and having the assurance of my salvation and having evidence of that new birth, I now desire to grow in my relationship with the Lord. The following has really helped me and I want to share it with you if you desire a closer relationship with your Saviour.

This is what I personally do faithfully, to develop a growing relationship. I am not boasting but only trying to help you.

  1. I begin each day reading the Bible, the Word of God. I need to read what God has to say to me. Some devotional books are good but reading the Bible is most important. Listening to Christian music is no substitute. Here is a daily Bible schedule you can use. (print it out)

It only takes 10 or 15 minutes to read 2 or 3 chapters a day. One chapter a day is better than nothing. If you are a new Christian begin reading in book of St. John, then Matthew, Mark, Luke and Acts.

If you don’t understand some words or verses, pray and ask God to give you understanding but keep on reading. If you miss a day start again the next day. Remember, good relationships means good communications.

  2. Next I talk to God. I use this form to keep track of who I am praying for and list all the answers to my prayers as well as the blessings on the right side and the back of this form. I do not pray in generalities but in specifics. (print it out)

This form will help you in many ways. If you will list your prayer requests and keep it current it will not be difficult for you to list all your answered prayers and blessings. It will take some thinking on your part. I usually fill the right side and the back up by the end of the year. What a blessing it is to me to see how God has blessed my prayer life. It will encourage you as you review all the blessings and prayers God has answered.

  3. I use this “take off” stuff that is not pleasing to God and then I “put on” what is righteous. Then I am ready to “put on the whole armor of God.” (print it out)

  4. Lastly I ask God to fill me with His Holy Spirit and then I thank Him for filling me. I want God to control my life and give me His power to live the Christian life for His honor and glory.

Please print out this booklet on “How to be filled with the Spirit.” (print it out)

Jesus said, “The thief (Satan) cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

Dear Friend, I do the above the first thing each morning. It only takes less than one hour to have my devotions. By putting first things first I have found my day goes a lot better by putting God first. What is one hour when God has given you and me 24 hours every day of our lives? We spend more time doing things that are not as important; don’t you agree? My relationship with God today is better than it ever has been. All praise be to God! The abundant life is the way to go. Blessings and answer to prayer are much better than the alternative

Read my personal letter to you for your spiritual growth.

The Bible tells us we can know that we have Eternal Life.

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13

What is the evidence of the New Birth? The Bible says:

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Cor. 5:17

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” 1 Peter 2:2

Let me give you a few of the evidences you will experience:

  1. You will have a desire to read the word of God. (God talking to you)
  2.
  3. You will have a desire to pray. (you talking to God)
  4.
  5. You will have a desire to hear the Word of God by attending a Bible believing, Bible teaching church faithfully.
  6.
  7. You will have a desire to obey what you read from God’s Word the Bible.

Click here for more information on this subject. (you might have to enlarge it a little)

If you truly believed and meant what you prayed when you prayed to received Jesus Christ to be your personal Saviour then there will be evidences that you will experience.

Just like when a baby is born into this world, there will be evidence of that birth, like crying, making sounds, the need for a diaper change etc.

Does this make sense to you?

Now, what do I do to grow my personal relationship with God?
